PARMA, Ohio — “Mary will find her way home,” Deacon William Fredrick, director of the Shrine of Our Lady of Mariapoch in Burton, Ohio, said confidently when he announced June 11 at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Parma that the new icon of Our Lady of Mariapoch commissioned for the shrine had been lost in transit from Hungary. The icon left Hungary in the company of Basilian Father Abel Szocska, apostolic administrator of the Eparchy of Nyiregyhaza, Hungary, and hegumen of the Basilian monastery at Mariapocs, and his companion and translator, Father Csaba Sivado. PARMA, Ohio — The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist will welcome a replica icon of Our Lady of Mariapoch from Hungary June 11. The icon was commissioned by the advisory board of the Shrine of Our Lady of Mariapoch, Burton, Ohio, and funded by the Catholic Home Missions grant. Before coming to the United States, the icon was to be touched to the miraculous weeping icon in Mariapocs, Hungary, and blessed by Archbishop Fulop Kocsis of Hajdudorog, Hungary, metropolitan archbishop of the Greek Catholic Church there. The archbishop’s representatives, Fathers Csaba Sivado and Abel Szocska, will travel to Parma to deliver the icon. The icon will be at the Parma cathedral during the 10 a.m. Divine Liturgy June 11, after which it will be available for veneration. It will be installed at the Burton shrine during the annual eparchial pilgrimage, Aug. 12 -13.
BEAVER, Pa. — Unity, protection, education, and assistance. It was 125 years ago, Feb. 14, 1892, that 743 faithful and clergy established these objectives for the Greek Catholic Union (GCU), and they still guide the organization today. The GCU commemorated its 125-year rich history of fraternal life and helping others May 6, with a moleben and banquet at its Seven Oaks Country Club in Beaver. The celebration drew about 250 people. Archbishop William Skurla of Pittsburgh and metropolitan of the Byzantine Catholic Church in the United States, as well as Bishop John Pazak of Phoenix, attended. The national organization grew from humble beginnings with local “lodges,” which were common in the late 19th century. The lodges offered new immigrants a space to gather according to ethnic group and operated as a community of support, social interaction, and education in the transition to life in the United States. The immigrants often worked jobs that carried significant risk of injury or death, and being a member of a lodge also insured financial assistance in such tragic cases... READ MORE

Several priests of the Eparchy of Parma concelebrated: the pastor, Father David A. Hannes; former pastors Father Michael Hayduk and Father Robert Stash; Father Michael Rosmarynowycz, pastor of St. Basil Parish in Sterling Heights, Michigan, and Father Andrew Summerson. Bi-ritual priest Father John Ederer, who has substituted as needed at the parish since 1979, and Roman Catholic Father Robert Kelm also concelebrated. Founding pastor Father Cyril Attak, currently at St. Stephen Parish in Allen Park, Michigan, could not attend... READ MORE

In the fall of 2016, the Byzantine Catholic Cultural Center set off on a new task, with help from Eastern Christian Media. This new project’s goal was to spread the faith and traditions of the Eastern Christian churches through media, specifically videos, that would showcase a special meal that one could make during the fasting or feasting times of the church year. A short spiritual reflection was also to be featured during the show. With approval from their superiors, Father Moses Wright from Holy Resurrection Monastery in St. Nazianz, Wisconsin, and Mother Gabriella Houck from Christ the Bridegroom Monastery in Burton, Ohio, agreed to host the show, named “Eastern Hospitality...” READ MORE
One of the simplest gestures of hospitality is to offer someone a drink of water. Readily available here in the United States, water is often taken for granted. Yet in other parts of the world, fresh water is a scarce commodity. Water is the liquid of life; all living things need water to survive. The human body is approximately 70 percent water and can only survive three to five days without it... READ MORE
