Since the second century, the Church has celebrated the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan River and the manifestation of the Most Holy Trinity.
In our Byzantine Rite, we have inherited many meaningful customs which make our liturgical worship inspiring, spiritually rich and close to the heart of our people. One such custom is the annual blessing of our homes, typically done during the days immediately following the Feast of the Theophany of Our Lord. Why do we do this? Just as our souls can be affected by sin, our homes can also become tainted and lose God's protective power. Therefore, it is important to have them blessed each year to secure God's blessings and protection. This act is akin to renewing our home insurance, but with a greater significance and effectiveness. As we welcome our priest during the holy season of Theophany to bless our home, let us remember that he brings the "blessing of Jordan," and without God's protection and blessing, our efforts would be in vain (Psalm 127:1). Be sure to contact your parish priest and schedule a time when he can visit your home for its annual blessing with Jordan water.
