Our national tradition of religious freedom encourages all people of faith to express their religious convictions in the public square. During his visit to the U.S., Pope Francis affirmed that religious liberty transcends places of worship, individuals, and families and is integral to the culture of every nation.
As Catholics, we must illuminate the truths of our faith to our nation through our unique roles in the Church’s mission.
Bishops/Clergy: govern the Church, uphold doctrine, and administer sacraments.
In political life: clergy help form the laity with basic principles, but do not tell the laity to vote for particular candidates.
Lay Faithful: bring the gospel to the world, advocate for justice, and serve in public office.
In political life: laity are called to form their consciences and make informed decisions to fulfill their duty to vote and participate in public life.
It is our responsibility to study Catholic teaching and tradition, participate in the Church’s life, learn from trustworthy sources about the issues facing our communities, and do our best to make wise judgements about candidates and public policy.Visit www.faithfulcitizenship.org to form your conscience for faithful citizenship, better pursue the common good, and obey the command of our Lord to love your neighbors.
