CHICAGO — Join Bishop Milan Lach, SJ, on a 13-day pilgrimage, marking Horizons’ 40th anniversary. The Sept. 16-28 pilgrimage, which has been nearly two years in the making, has three objectives.
The first is to honor the Mother of God in her expression of love for her children as Our Lady of Mariapoch.
The second is to walk in the footsteps of three 20th-century Ruthenian Catholic martyrs, Bishops Paul Gojdich, Basil Hopko and Theodore Romzha.
The third is to experience the Ruthenian Catholic Church in Europe, from which most of the ancestors of the faithful of the Eparchy of Parma hailed.
Pilgrims will begin in Vienna, where the original weeping icon of Our Lady of Mariapocs is venerated. Pilgrims will visit the former Ruthenian church in Vienna, tour the historic center and enjoy an evening with Orthodox Sister Vassa Larin of “Coffee with Sister Vassa.”
Pilgrims will proceed through Hungary, with stops in the medieval town of Szentendre, and in the Greek Catholic eparchies of Hungary, to discover the local church.
Slovakia is next, where pilgrims will join the 400th-anniversary celebrations for the Archeparchy of Presov and the large annual Marian pilgrimage to L’utina. Pilgrims will stay in the High Tatra Mountains and enjoy Slovakia’s natural beauty.
Other highlights include veneration of the relics of Blesseds Gojdich and Hopko, prayer in a traditional wooden church, white water rafting, and a tour of the city of Kosice.
Pilgrims will proceed to western Ukraine to venerate the relics of Blessed Romzha, before spending a full retreat day at the Shrine of Our Lady of Mariapocs in western Hungary. Pilgrims will enjoy a full day in Budapest, before flying home.
The itinerary is chock-full of activity; pilgrims must be able to keep up with the pace. The cost is $4,049, including round-trip airfare from New York, accommodations, transport in Europe, and most meals. No visas required for U.S. citizens.
