PARMA, Ohio — The Eparchy of Parma has unveiled its full program in celebration of its 50th anniversary this year.
The festivities will be held during the third week of June, under the theme, “Who do you say that I am?” (Mt 16:15). The theme underlines the faithfulness of the eparchy in proclaiming Jesus Christ Son of the Living God for 50 years, as well as the call to keep the focus on Jesus Christ moving into the future.
The eparchy will host a two-day pastoral theology workshop for all of the clergy of the Metropolia of Pittsburgh, June 19-20. The theme of the workshop, organized by the Intereparchial Vocations Commission, is “Cultivating a Life in Christ.”
Fathers David Abernethy and David Anderson will lead the workshop and give the clergy tools for pastoral ministry and vocational discernment from the heart of the Byzantine spiritual and liturgical tradition. This workshop will be held at Holy Spirit Parish, 5500 W 54th St., in Parma. For information, write to [email protected].
Also beginning June 19, the eparchy’s teens will gather for the 11th annual Boys and Girls Camp, this year held June 19-22 as a joint event on the grounds of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, 1900 Carlton Road, in Parma, on the occasion of the 50th-anniversary celebrations.
The camps, this year run by the nuns of Christ the Bridegroom Monastery under the same theme as the jubilee, will feature an array of activities, prayers, speakers, and times for confession. For information on the camp, go to page 12 or
www.parma.org/boys-and-girls-camps.
The camp’s walking pilgrimage June 21 is open to all families. It will begin at 9 a.m. at the cathedral and head to Holy Spirit Parish for a Panachida, then return to the cathedral for the prayer of Sixth Hour.
The walking pilgrimage marks the start of the anniversary activities that are open to the public.
The next public event will be Vespers at the cathedral at 6 p.m., followed by a buffet dinner and a presentation.
A Parastas for the deceased of the Eparchy of Parma will begin at 9 p.m., followed by an all-night vigil of prayer. Confessions will be available from 6 p.m. until midnight.
The celebration will resume June 22, with a Moleben to St. John the Baptist, patron of the eparchy, at 10 a.m., followed by a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, celebrated by Metropolitan William C. Skurla of Pittsburgh. The homilist will be Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, prefect of the Congregation for Eastern Churches.
The eparchy expects more than 10 bishops from other jurisdictions to join the celebration. A buffet luncheon will follow at 1 p.m.
