8/5/23: This day, our group went on a 2.5 hr pilgrimage (walking) to the place where the Vigil Mass with the Pope was held. I am in awe of their strength and courage, because they weathered an intense heat wave that caused hundreds of people to have heat exhaustion (and some had heat stroke)! In order to rest my body and gain strength for the long travel days ahead, I made the decision with the approval of our group to stay back. This was very painful for me, and the last thing I wanted to do was let the Eparchy down. I was very frustrated with myself and my limitations, but ultimately accepted the fact that God had placed me where I was and given me the cross I had been given for a reason. It is quite humiliating to be so physically weak, and also horrifying to potentially disappoint the generosity of those who enabled me to travel here, but I knew that it was an invitation to take Christ’s hand and allow Him to guide me. After booking a hotel room for the night, I doubted my decision greatly - but after asking Christ for help and for approval, providentially I walked right past a priest after grabbing my bags to leave. I asked him for his blessing, and with a big smile, he gave it so graciously. I knew that it was Christ working through him, giving me the confirmation that I needed this day of rest. Later in the day, my pilgrim companions were so happy that I didn’t go - because even though they were in great health, the conditions were extremely severe - even for them! This gave me consolation.
My wonderful companions ended the evening in a Vigil Mass with the Pope, and as I rested throughout the night, I knew that we were wholly united through Christ and prayers.
God bless you and keep you! More tomorrow! - Gina
