SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio — Sister Vassa Larin, an Orthodox nun, scholar and host of the popular online program, “Coffee with Sister Vassa,” was the guest speaker at the 34th annual Eastern Churches Seminar at the Notre Dame College chapel Oct. 21. The Eparchy of Parma was an event co-sponsor; 80 people attended.
Sister Vassa’s topic was “Timeless Christianity in Today’s Changing World.” She spoke of the two pillars of tradition — history and mystery. History is changeable; it takes place in time, she said. Mystery refers to the eternal content that people pass on through unchangeable sacred tradition and also changeable tradition, found in culture and customs.
After elaborating on the positive and negative aspects of each, she concluded with a theology of history. She encouraged people to persevere and stay in church.
“Just stick around; we’ll figure it out,” she concluded. A brief question-and-answer session and a book signing followed.
