In our Byzantine Catholic Tradition, flowers are blessed on the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos. This tradition stems from the Apostles finding Mary's tomb empty, filled with a heavenly fragrance and flowers. The flowers symbolize the presence of God's saving Power. To commemorate this event, flowers are brought to Church for blessing.
The central icon of the feast portrays Christ receiving His mother into His arms. Mary lies on her death bed surrounded by angels and saints, while Christ holds a small child representing her soul. This privilege awaits all Christians who carry Christ in their lives. The icon also includes bishops, traditionally identified as St. James, St. Timothy, Heirotheus, and Dionysius the Areopagite. St. Paul and St. Peter are shown honoring Mary, while John the Evangelist is depicted leaning on her body. The presence of apostles and angels in the clouds reminds us of how the Apostles were miraculously brought to Jerusalem before Mary's death.
