As Catholics and Americans, we are blessed to participate in our nation’s political and public life. Our freedoms respect the dignity of individuals and allow us to come together for the common good.
To counteract the increasing anger, fear, and heated arguments found in political rhetoric, the U.S. Catholic bishops propose the moral framework of Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship to help heal these bitter divisions. This document reflects on precisely how we, as disciples of the Lord, can promote good and oppose evil through our participation in political life by:- Forming our consciences
- Entering into “genuine dialogue and openness to others”
- Putting on “the mind of Christ”
- Making informed decisions with prudence, based on Church teaching and tradition
