On October 1, we celebrate the Protection of the Theotokos (or the Intercession of the Theotokos), is a significant feast day in the Byzantine Catholic Church. This solemnity commemorates an event in the 10th century at the Blachernae church in Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul). According to tradition, the Theotokos appeared during a vigil service, surrounded by angels and saints, and spread her veil over the congregation as a sign of protection.
This feast day symbolizes the protective and intercessory role of the Theotokos (Mother of God) for all Christians. The event is remembered for the Virgin Mary’s prayer for the world and her plea to Jesus Christ to accept the prayers of the faithful.
The Chancery will be closed on October 1 in liturgical observance of
the Protection of the Theotokos.
