In Luke 10:25-37, we find the parable of the Good Samaritan. It starts with a lawyer asking Jesus how to attain eternal life. Jesus, the wise teacher, prompts the lawyer to reflect on the law. The lawyer recites the two greatest commandments: to love God with all one’s heart and to love one’s neighbor as oneself. Seeking further clarity, the lawyer asks, “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus responds with the parable of the Good Samaritan, depicting a man who is beaten, robbed, and left on the roadside. While a priest and a Levite pass by without helping, a Samaritan, despite being despised, stops to care for the man, tending to his wounds and providing shelter. Jesus teaches that our neighbor includes everyone, not just those who are like us. He calls us to show compassion and mercy to all, regardless of their background.
This passage encourages us to love and serve others, break down barriers, and take practical steps to help those in need. It reminds us to be agents of love and compassion, acting without prejudice or hesitation.
