St. Mary School helps others during Catholic Schools Week
CLEVELAND — St. Mary Byzantine Catholic School celebrated Catholic Schools Week, Jan. 29-Feb. 2, by reaching out to help others in need.
The week began with an assembly in the gym with a guest speaker from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, who taught students about cancer and blood cells. The students raised $1,637.59 for the organization with a weeklong penny war and a walkathon in the school gym Feb. 2. Each class had to collect as many pennies as possible. At the end of the week, the class with the most pennies was rewarded with a dress-down day.
Bishop Milan Lach, SJ, apostolic administrator of Parma, visited the staff and students Jan. 30. He accompanied them in church with singing, prayer and a homily, during the celebration of the feast of The Three Holy Hierarchs. After Divine Liturgy, two students toured him around the school to visit the classrooms. He seemed to be very happy when he saw the kids learning and continuing to progress in their studies.
The students put on their science fair Jan. 31. The first place winners received gold medals and will present their projects at a regional fair.
To round out the week, students did a service project; they made cards and gift bags for the homebound.
