STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. — St. Basil the Great Parish hosted iconographer Father Damian Higgins, a Ukrainian Catholic Monk of Mount Tabor at Holy Transfiguration Monastery in Redwood Valley, California, in September.
Parishioners and friends participated and painted the icon of the “Image not-made-by-hands.”
Father Higgins travels to share his love of iconography; a number of his works are found in churches around the world.
The parish has offered this class with Father Higgins annually for more than a decade. Throughout his visits, he has attracted students from the parish and throughout the community.
Many participants return, having been touched by the beauty of the completed icon.
No experience or artistic talent is necessary. Following the class, icons are brought into church and blessed by the pastor, Father Mychail Rozmarynowycz, during the Divine Liturgy.
