MENTOR-On-The-Lake, Ohio — Sunday, February 9 at 2pm, Holy Resurrection Parish (merged parishes of Holy Transfiguration and St. Stephen) celebrated a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy with Bishop Milan Lach at St. Andrew’s Church in Mentor-on-the-Lake, Ohio. This served as the final liturgy for this church and enabled the former parish of Holy Transfiguration to take the opportunity to say goodbye to the church where they had worshipped together for many years.
Bishop Milan concelebrated the Divine Liturgy with Fr. Bruce Riebe, Holy Resurrection’s parish administrator; Fr. Lukas Mitro, parochial vicar for Holy Resurrection Parish; Fr. Marek Visnovsky, Protosyncellus for the Eparchy of Parma; Fr. John Kachuba, former parish administrator for Holy Transfiguration and St. Stephen Parishes; Fr. Francis Fedorisin from Slovakia and Fr. John Kumse from Assumption of St. Mary Slovenian Parish in Cleveland. 116 people attended this final liturgy.
After the Divine Liturgy, those in attendance gathered together for desserts and beverages. Wonderful fellowship was had and one of the highlights was the opening of a time capsule by Frank Bungo, one of the founding members of St. Andrew’s Church. The box contained a newspaper from the year St. Andrew’s Church was completed, some photos of the original structure used prior to the current St. Andrew’s Church, holy cards, and other items.
Bishop Milan exhorted the faithful to be a people of hope in spite of the sadness in the closure of St. Andrew’s Church. He stated that this hope has a name and He is Jesus Christ!
