PARMA, Ohio — Thanks to the dedication of nine grandmas, including a parishioner of the Byzantine Catholic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, and a group of women from Parma Heights Baptist Church, children at Mary Queen of Peace School and Benjamin Franklin School in Cleveland, received a total of 620 knitted hats this fall.
The volunteer project Kaps for Kids has ladies knitting warm hats for children in need. It relies on the donations of yarn and cash, and on the time and talent of knitters.
Kaps for Kids was started more than 25 years ago, by Harriet Allen, a former teacher in the Cleveland public schools.
The number of hats that were knitted and donated in the first year were only 62. This year, the knitters made 620 hats. Hundreds of hats have been made over the 25-plus-year span of the project.
The knitters hope to continue for years to come, with the help of God, prayers and more donations.
