It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Fr. Jim Knapp, SJ. Fr. Knapp joined the Society of Jesus at the age of 18 in August 1969. He received his priestly formation in Canada, where he studied the Byzantine Divine Liturgy and the Ukrainian language. He was granted faculties to celebrate the Divine Liturgy by Ukrainian Catholic Hierarchs in Toronto and Chicago. Whenever priests were unavailable to celebrate the Liturgy at St. Mary’s Assumption Parish and our own St. Louis Parish, Fr. Knapp graciously stepped in. Both parishes recognize that his generous and loving service allowed them to function during some very difficult times.
Celebrating 50 years as a Jesuit in 2019, Fr. Knapp spent his final years at Jesuit Hall in St. Louis, remaining an active community member. His gentle spirit and unwavering service will be remembered fondly.
